Clinical Trial at UBC Looking For Participants: Treating Anxiety in Parkinson’s disease with a Multi-Strain Probiotic (TAP)
- On April 28, 2021
Dr. Silke Appel-Cresswell and her team at the UBC Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre are currently recruiting for a clinical trial evaluating the use of an oral multi-strain probiotic in the treatment of anxiety in individuals with Parkinson’s disease, as well as monitoring changes to the gut microbiome.
Participants will complete two study visits (primarily remotely with a short in-person portion) that include clinical assessments, a neuropsychiatric interview, electronic questionnaires, blood samples and collection of fecal samples at home. If eligible after screening, participants will be randomized to either the probiotic or placebo (blinded) to be taken twice a day for 3 months.
You may be eligible to participate if the following apply:
- You have Parkinson’s disease and are 40-80 years old
- You experience mild to moderate anxiety
- You have not had Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and are not on Duodopa
- You are not currently receiving psychotherapy, or seeing a counsellor
- You have not taken probiotics or antibiotics in the last 3 months
